I find the whole watchtower jehovah witness thing a little tedious myself. Nice enough folks, but I mean why can't they just leave me alone with my idol worship and pagan imagary?

The song is one of Dylan's best, he does in less than 3 minuets , what he did in 7 minuets with 'Hard Rain" ( love Weir's version, maybe HIS best Dylan cover ).
Evocative, cryptical, and apocalyptic ; the spareness of Dylan's Harding version, I think suits it best, though I think the Hendrix is outstanding too .
Dylan himself, has said he likes the Hendrix, and thus most post Hendrix versions are guitar solo version . Dave Mason's version should be mentioned in this context . There are 3 problems I have with the Dead's version : 1. It is not very original in concept, others have done it this way. 2. Weirs, "I wanna be Dylan or Howling Wolf" vocals, take away from the meaning of the song.3 . These "as many notes as I can play" solos by Garcia , are not him in his strongest , there is no guitar player I love more than him, but I don't find his solos here all that fascinating .
What is good about their version?:1. The "theme" of the song lends well to the "theme" of 'Morning Dew' . 2. Garcia plays more than Weir sings. 3. It is a relatively less annoying than yet another r, 'Miracle', or 'Last time", and it might mean you won't get another 'T. Stones>NFA .

Everyone should retire the song - boring and pedestrian

Weak, overplayed selection for the boys (in later years of course), especially in the usual coming out of drums/space spot.

I've always liked it, probably because Jerry liked to play fast on his solos. Isn't it better than I'll Take You Home?

Love Dylan's and Hendrix's version, don't like the Dead's. What I really never understood, though, was how it wound up with a post-drums slot. Seems like strictly pedestrian first set tune to me.

I agree. It is a boring selection. I love Dylan, but his version bores me as well....and Hendrix I just don't like, period.

I agree, it is generally uninspired.
